Relieving letter vs experience certificate: the two documents HR holds onto

What each one proves, and why your next employer will ask for both.

Checked 20 October 2026.

Leaving a job in India comes with two pieces of paper, and new employers often ask for both.

The relieving letter

It confirms that you resigned, that the company accepted it, and that you've been released from your duties on a stated date. In short: you're free to join someone else. It's usually issued once your notice is served and the handover is done.

The experience certificate

It confirms that you worked there, from when to when, and in what role. Some companies combine the two into one letter.

Why they get delayed

Most delays come from the full and final settlement: unserved notice, an unreturned laptop, a pending clearance from one department. Sometimes it's just a slow queue. Occasionally it's leverage. We'd call that last one Notice Period Hostage.

What helps

Ask HR in writing for both documents and the expected date, keep your resignation acceptance email, finish the exit checklist early, and keep copies of payslips and your appointment letter. Payslips and bank statements also prove employment if a letter is late.

This is general information about how workplaces and the rules usually work, not legal advice about your contract. For your own situation, read your appointment letter and policies, and talk to your state labour department, a union or an employment lawyer.
